VICE RECTOR LAUDS IUIU STAFF FOR THEIR SUPPORT DURING COVID-19.

The Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU) Vice Rector in charge of Academic Affairs has lauded the University staff and students for their continuous support and patience with the University as Academic institutions country wide remain closed due to the Novel Corona Virus disease.

 Speaking in his office at the Main Campus Mbale recently, Prof. Ismail Simbwa Gyagenda acknowledged the financial adversity the institution is going through due to the absence of students in the University but appreciated the staff for understanding the situation.

The Vice Rector explained that following several meetings with the University Council, Management and the staff representatives, it was agreed that the University pays its staff some potions of salary from the months of June to December 2020.

“The University Council meetings that took place on 24th June and 8th July resolved that the University should pay some percentage of staff salaries from June to December as agreed in meetings with the staff Association leaders” Gyagenda explained.

He further added that paying potions up to December will give council time to plan source for more funds and to plan how the University will operate in the post-COVID. He however emphasized that if the University gets money, they will revise the payment plan irrespective of whether the government has opened or not.

“The management is working hard to ensure that the University gets alternative sources of income to enable them sustain staff welfare. so, any time we get money we shall review the payment plan, and we shall communicate to the staff about such developments” the Vice Rector emphasized.

Prof Gyagenda revealed that unlike other institutions that suspended salaries or paid half salary immediately schools went closed in march over covid-19, IUIU paid its staff full salary upto May.

In addition, the professor thanked the staff who remained at campus during the closure.

“Some critical departments have remained open since closure of schools March and we thank the staff in such departments as Registry, Bursary, Security, Health Center, Public Relations, and Secretariat, Estates for risking their lives to keep the University operating during these hard times” he added.

Professor Gyagenda said that the university will continue updating its students and other stake holders on any development and encouraged students to be strong, have faith and continue revising their books while at home besides helping their parents during this break
