Students at the Islamic University in Uganda have received training in the coffee business from the Coffee Development Authority from 13th -15h February 2024 at the Main Campus in Mbale.

The three-day training follows an agreement signed between IUIU and UCDA on April 17, 2023, aiming to promote domestic coffee consumption, provide barista skills training for students, and encourage value addition among the country's youth.

The chairperson of the Islamic University in Uganda Coffee Association, Mr. Jamil Ali Rajab, expressed his appreciation to UCDA for equipping the students with skills and encouraged other students to embrace these skills and join the association to benefit from the training. Ms. Miriam, a member of the IUIU Coffee Association, mentioned plans to raise awareness about the benefits of coffee.

Nason Bisathu, the Quality Assurance Officer at UCDA, commended IUIU for taking the initiative to sign the MOU with UCDA to uplift the coffee industry. He stated that the training aims to enhance the student's capacity in barista skills with the hope that they can make a good cup of coffee and foster a culture of coffee drinking at the university, ultimately increasing domestic coffee consumption from 6% to over 50%. He added that the trained students will also pass on their skills to others through peer-to-peer interaction.

The deputy university coordinator, Mr. Nasibu Yusuf, expressed gratitude to UCDA for including IUIU in this initiative, highlighting that the training adds value to the students' study skills.

At the end of the training, the students demonstrated the skills attained in the training to the Director of Kampala Campus Dr Twaha Kasule, the university secretary Mr Sewankambo Hamza, and the university coordinator Mr Siraj Mukwana.
