Islamic University in Uganda joined the rest of the world to celebrate World Breastfeeding Week on Thursday 3rd of August 2023 at the main campus in Mbale.

This year the event is celebrated under the theme ''Let’s make breastfeeding and work, work!'' from the 1st - 7th of August 2023.
World Breastfeeding Week (WBW) is an annual global campaign that aims to raise awareness and promote the benefits of breastfeeding. It was first celebrated in 1992 and is organized by the World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action (WABA), along with various partners and stakeholders.

Throughout the week, various activities are organized, including seminars, conferences, workshops, public awareness campaigns, and community events.

At IUIU, the activities were organized by Principal Hajat Sarah Namutebi, the Nurse tutors and students of Nursing and Midwifery under the faculty of health sciences. The students visited Namakwekwe Health Center III, Nothern City Division in Mbale City to inform, educate, and support mothers and families on the importance of breastfeeding and its positive impact on health, development, and well-being.

Dr. jamil serwanga the vice Rector in charge of academics urged men to support their partners while breastfeeding through the provision of physical and emotional support.
''The fathers or male partners would be so much helpful to the breastfeeding mum through buying the required foodstuff for a balanced diet, helping out on domestic activities''. he said.

Dr. Jamil also encouraged mothers to breastfeed their children for at least two years citing  Surah al-Baqarah: 233 ''The Qur'an mentioned, the period of breastfeeding in the teachings of Islam is two years, it says that, Mothers shall suckle their children for two full years, especially for those who want perfect breastfeeding.''
