The Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU) on Monday, 21 September 2026, hosted a delegation from Jigawa State Government, Nigeria, for a high-level institutional engagement aimed at exploring opportunities for collaboration and benchmarking IUIU’s experience in Islamic higher education, particularly in the establishment and management of medical education.
The three-member delegation included H.E. Malam Bala Ibrahim, Secretary, Jigawa State Government; Hon. Prof. Isah Yusuf Chamo, Commissioner, Ministry of Higher Education, Jigawa State; and Mr. Sanisu Jamilu Basiru, District Community Leader.
The delegation was received at IUIU Kampala Campus where they held a fruitful engagement with the Rector, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ismail Simbwa Gyagenda, the Kampala Campus Director, University Secretary and other members of the University management and staff.
A key focus of the visit was Jigawa State’s interest in establishing an Islamic Medical University. The delegation sought to learn from IUIU’s institutional experience, particularly through its Habib Medical School, as they explore the development of a similar institution in Jigawa State.
The delegation’s interest in IUIU followed their engagement with the Islamic Solidarity Fund (ISF) in Saudi Arabia, where IUIU was identified as an institution that could provide valuable insights and a practical benchmark in the development of Islamic higher education and medical training.
During the discussions, both sides explored several areas of mutual interest, including staff exchange programmes, capacity building and training, student exchange programmes, student sponsorship opportunities, institutional partnerships and other areas of academic and professional cooperation.
The delegation also toured IUIU Kampala Campus and Habib Medical School, gaining first-hand insight into the University’s facilities, academic environment and institutional operations.
On Tuesday, 22 September 2026, the delegation proceeded to IUIU Females Campus (IUIU-FC), Kabojja, where they toured the campus and held further discussions with the campus management on areas of potential collaboration.
The visit underscores IUIU’s growing role as a platform for knowledge exchange, institutional benchmarking and international collaboration within the Islamic higher education sector. It also presents an opportunity to strengthen the longstanding relationship between IUIU and Jigawa State while opening new avenues for cooperation in education, medical training, staff and student mobility, and human capital development.
The engagement marks another important step towards building stronger educational partnerships between Uganda and Nigeria and advancing shared aspirations for quality, accessible and values-based higher education.
