Collaboration Between Research Centre for Islamic History, Art and Culture (IRCICA) and IUIU

The Rector of IUIU, His Excellency, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ismail Simbwa Gyagenda signed a memorandum of understanding with IRCICA on Wednesday, 11th October 2023. The broad areas of collaboration include Research and Publication, Seminars and Conferences as well as capacity building in training, short courses, and work attachment. Shortly before the signing, the Rector had a meeting with his host, His Excellency, Prof. Dr. Mahmud Erol Kilic, the Director General at the headquarters of IRCICA in İstanbul Türkiye.

In his remarks, the Director General informed the Rector that IRCICA is a subsidiary organ of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) established in 1979 as the first Cultural Centre. That its main objective is to produce research and reference works and promote academic studies around the world on the history of Islamic civilization, the cultural history and heritage of the different regions of the Islamic world, and their cultural interactions with other peoples within and outside the Islamic world. Accordingly, the program is implemented through research projects, conferences, training programs, documentary exhibitions, etc. organized in cooperation with the Member States, their universities and cultural institutions, and international organizations.

The Rector thanked the Director General for the tremendous work and emphasized the need for collaboration in research and publication. He also used this opportunity to inform his counterpart that IUIU was ready and willing to host the international conference on Islamic civilization and heritage in East African countries. The Rector expressed his appreciation to the Government and people of Türkiye for the support rendered to IUIU in various areas. The Rector was accompanied by Mr. Hamza Sewankambo, University Secretary, and Mr. Saim Çelik, Lecturer-IUIU. In attendance were Prof. Dr. Aboubacar A. Senghore, Deputy Director, IRCICA, and Mr. Said Kasimoglu, Head of the Arts and Handicrafts Department.
