Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU), in partnership with the Uganda National Commission for UNESCO, held a half-day engagement workshop on Tuesday, 8th July, at the main campus in Mbale, to promote education for sustainable development and greening higher education.
The event drew participation from student leaders, lecturers, and university management.
The workshop was part of ongoing national efforts to implement the Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) policy and roll out the National Qualifications Framework, supporting Uganda’s broader education reform agenda.
The Vice Rector in charge of Academic Affairs, Dr. Serwanga Jamil, praised the workshop as a timely intervention, stressing the IUIU's commitment to advancing sustainable development through education. “We are reviewing our curriculum to reflect principles of sustainability better and to ensure that higher education plays its role in shaping a more sustainable future,” he stated.
In an Interview, Mr. Twebaze David, the Assistant Secretary General in charge of the Education Programme at the Uganda National Commission for UNESCO, emphasized the need to align university education with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4, particularly SDG 4.7, which advocates for integrating education for sustainable development into learning systems.
“Our goal is to equip educators with the knowledge, skills, and values necessary to champion sustainability in both academic and community settings,” said Mr. Twebaze. He noted that the initiative also aims to prepare universities to accommodate learners from the new competence-based lower secondary curriculum, calling for reforms in curriculum delivery and orientation.
