  • 16th May, 2026 3:29pm

Al-Azhar University Indonesia (UAI) and the Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish an international academic partnership on May 7, 2026.

The event was led by UAI Rector Prof. Dr. Widodo Muktiyo and IUIU Rector Prof. Ismail Simbwa Gyagenda, witnessed by Deputy Director for Research, Publication, and Innovation, Dr. Gyagenda Abdulswamad. The collaboration aims to strengthen global networks in education, research, and academic development.

Following the official signing, the IUIU delegation met with UAI’s Faculty of Psychology and Education to discuss specific collaborative programs. The two institutions agreed to launch guest lectures and co-supervision as their initial programs, with plans for student exchanges, joint research, co-publishing, seminars, and international symposiums. This partnership marks a strategic step towards building global cooperation between the two Universities.

On Saturday, May 9, 2026, the Office of International Affairs of Universitas Muhammadiyah Tangerang (UMT) held a strategic coordination meeting with Dr. Gyagenda Abdulswamad from the Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU) at the UMT office in Tangerang, Indonesia. Led by UMT Director Dr. Aidil Syah Putra and other officials, the meeting focused on establishing cross-continental collaboration across two major pillars:

  • Academic Programs: The two universities plan to launch student exchange programs, allowing students to study abroad for one to two semesters, and to implement lecturer exchange initiatives to enrich global perspectives through visiting lecturer roles.
  • Research Development: To improve the quality of scientific publications, both parties agreed on joint research projects targeting global and local issues, joint publications in reputable international journals, and co-hosting international conferences, seminars, and workshops.

Dr. Gyagenda had visited Indonesia for a strategic training on the implementation of electronic grant-tracking systems intended to enhance the transparency and accountability of cross-continental funding on Students’ scholarship programs.
