The Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU) held a sensitisation and practical training workshop on implementing the University Risk Management Framework, aimed at strengthening institutional resilience, accountability, and proactive risk management.
The Internal Audit Department organised the workshop, which brought together members of University management, academic and administrative leaders, and other stakeholders to strengthen their understanding of risk management and its practical application across the University.
In his opening remarks, the Vice Rector in charge of Academic Affairs, Dr Jamil Serwanga, described the training as crucial to the sustainability of IUIU, noting that the achievements made by the University need to be protected through effective risk management. He added that growth comes with challenges, making it important for the University to identify and manage risks that could affect its continued progress.
The Rector was represented by the Vice Rector in charge of Finance and Administration, Prof Abdul Kaziba Mpaata, who commended the Internal Audit Department for organising the training and expressed hope that it would be beneficial to the University.
Prof Mpaata noted that institutions should be willing to take calculated risks while putting appropriate measures in place to manage potential challenges. He highlighted systematic and unsystematic risks, noting that some risks can be controlled or mitigated by the institution. He cited currency and credit risks and emphasised the need for appropriate mitigation measures.
He further encouraged participants to engage freely in identifying and understanding risk parameters affecting the University. He urged the Internal Audit Department to strengthen independence, responsibility and accountability, while developing the intellectual acumen to assess the environment in which it operates. He also emphasised that Internal Audit is a function that supports management and encouraged the integration of the Risk Management Framework into IUIU’s broader risk philosophy.
Delivering the main presentation, the Internal Auditor, Dr Aniku Ahmed, said the training was intended to move risk management beyond documentation and ensure that it becomes part of planning, decision-making and institutional performance. He explained that the framework provides a structured approach to identifying, assessing, treating, monitoring and reporting risks across the University.

Dr Aniku emphasised that effective risk management requires clear ownership, with units responsible for managing risks within their areas, while Management provides direction and resources and Internal Audit offers independent assurance and advisory support.
The framework also encourages the University to assess risks based on their likelihood and potential impact, evaluate existing controls, and take appropriate action to reduce exposure. The process is intended to help IUIU identify emerging risks early, strengthen decision-making and improve the achievement of institutional objectives.
