UNESCO Partners with IUIU to Promote Education for Sustainable Development
09th Jul, 2025 12:25pm
The Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU) participated in Uganda’s 1st Global Innovation Index (GII) Symposium, held on 15th to 16th May 2025, at Mestil Hotel & Residences in Kampala, Uganda. The symposium was jointly organised by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation – Office of the President (STI-OP) and the Uganda Registration Services Bureau (URSB). The 2-day high-level symposium brought together key participants from different Ministries, Departments, and Government Agencies (MDAs), as well as several other key stakeholders, both from within the Public and Private Sectors in Uganda. IUIU was represented by Dr Umar Yahya, Dean Faculty of Science.
The GII is an annual ranking of countries by their capacity for and success in innovation, published by the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO). Uganda currently ranks 121st out of the ranked 132 economies, which represent 94.3% of the world's population. As established during the 2-day symposium, Uganda’s current ranking is, in part, largely attributed to the availability, accessibility, and management of GII ranking data. As a key stakeholder, especially in generating data on research-related GII indicators, IUIU committed to stepping up its efforts towards enhancing our Research, Innovation, Publications, and Commercialisation data management and outputs.
As an action outcome of the symposium, a 15-member Task Force has been nominated to spearhead the implementation plan of the activities of the seven (07) different clusters that together generate GII Ranking Data. The clusters include: Institutions, Human Capital Development and Research, Infrastructure, Market Sophistication, Business Sophistication, Knowledge and Technology Outputs, and the Creative Outputs. IUIU shall primarily be expected to participate in the Human Capital Development and Research Cluster, and Dr Umar Yahya was designated as the focal person to further this engagement.
