IUIU Hosts Intellectual Property Training to Boost Research and Innovation

  • 17th May, 2025 4:57pm

The Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU), in collaboration with the Uganda Registration Services Bureau (URSB), held a two-day Training of Trainers (ToT) workshop on intellectual property (IP) at the university's main campus in Mbale from 15 to 16 May 2025.

The workshop, organized by the Directorate of Research, Publication, and Innovation at IUIU, aimed to equip the university’s research coordinators with vital knowledge and skills in IP, including how to patent and commercialize academic innovations.

The Deputy Director of the Directorate of Research, Publication, and Innovation, Dr. Gyagenda AbduSwamad, emphasized the importance of training in enhancing research productivity at the institution.
“We believe this training is timely. It will help our coordinators understand the relevance of patents and commercialization, which in turn will benefit both our staff and students,” he said.

The workshop was facilitated by senior URSB officials, including Mr. Lumu Bob Rogers, a senior officer in charge of the Technology and Innovation Support Centre (TISC) Programme. “This programme, supported by the World Intellectual Property Organisation, provides access to high-quality technology information to improve the quality of research in developing countries,” Mr. Lumu noted.

He added that the training aims to build the capacity of research coordinators to guide students and researchers in generating credible innovations that can gain market relevance and contribute to economic growth.
