The Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU) is pioneering a new approach to research, moving beyond traditional academic boundaries to address Uganda's development needs.

The university is championing a transdisciplinary framework that integrates insights from various fields and incorporates input from non-academic stakeholders, including businesses and community leaders.

This Was Highlighted by Mr. Yiga Yasin, a lecturer at IUIU, in his study presentation titled "Transdisciplinary Research Approach in Knowledge Integration in Private Institutions in Uganda" at the recent 6th International Islamic Universities Conference held at the main campus in Mbale between 4th and 6th August 2025.

According to the study, research must move beyond its traditional confines to actively incorporate expertise from diverse disciplines. Mr. Yasin explained that by integrating these varied sources of knowledge, research within private institutions can become more relevant and directly applicable to real-world problems. This, he noted, could drive innovation, economic growth, and social development.

Mr. Yasin noted, “Transdisciplinary research is a transformative approach that breaks down disciplinary barriers and brings together researchers, policymakers, practitioners, and community stakeholders to solve complex real-world problems.”

IUIU's Director of Research, Dr. Maimuna Nimulola, affirmed the university's commitment to this collaborative model. She noted that IUIU is already conducting the integration of knowledge in all our courses.

She stated that by championing integrated research, the university is not only enhancing its academic standing but is also playing a vital role in shaping a more prosperous future for the nation.

“This is not the first kind of knowledge integration,” Dr. Nimulola said. “IUIU has already been implementing integration across all our courses. This conference allows us to strengthen that cause, and inshallah, build a stronger foundation for integrated knowledge.”
