IUIU CROWNED BEST EAST AFRICAN TEAM AT 2026 DAYSTAR MEDIA MOOT COURT COMPETITION

  • 10th September, 2026 12:20pm

The Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU) has registered another significant milestone in legal education after its Faculty of Law team was crowned the Best East African Team at the 2026 Daystar Media Moot Court Competition (DMCC), held at Daystar University’s Athi River Campus in Machakos, Kenya.

The regional competition, held from 31 August to 6 September 2026, brought together law students from 32 universities across East Africa to test their abilities in legal research, written advocacy, oral argument and critical analysis.

Participating institutions included the University of Nairobi (Kisumu Campus), Kenyatta University, Daystar University, Chuka University, University of Embu, Kabarak University, Catholic University of Eastern Africa, Riara University and Moi University from Kenya, alongside Makerere University, Uganda Christian University, Nkumba University, Bishop Stuart University and IUIU, among others.

The competition provided a practical platform for students to engage with contemporary legal questions relating to human rights, media and communication law, intellectual property and socio-economic frameworks within the East African Community (EAC).

IUIU delivered an outstanding performance across both the moot and research categories. In the moot category, students prepared written memorials and presented oral arguments before panels of expert judges on a legal problem addressing human rights violations, media freedom, intellectual property and economic governance within the EAC. The research category required participants to prepare academic papers addressing human rights and socio-economic rights within regional EAC frameworks and defend their findings orally.

At the conclusion of the competition, IUIU’s four main oralists emerged as the top-performing moot team in East Africa, while the University’s research team finished among the top five universities. Based on the delegation’s cumulative performance, IUIU was officially recognised as the Best East African Team.

The achievement is particularly significant as it places IUIU among the leading universities in the region in competitive legal advocacy and demonstrates the ability of its students to apply classroom knowledge to complex legal issues in a demanding regional setting.
