There was the same number of female graduands as the male at the recently concluded 27th graduation ceremony of the Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU) held on 9th November at the main campus in Mbale.

The male students had a numerical advantage of just one student at 1,131 graduands compared to the 1,130 female.

IUIU’s Rector Dr. Ahmed Kaweesa Ssengendo hailed the development as a mark of progress in achieving the affirmative action and lifting the status of women in the country.

“This year we have graduated 50% male and 50% female and this clearly shows how IUIU is gender-sensitive,” he said

The University’s Academic Registrar, Dr. Halima Wakabi Akbar revealed that the creation of the female campus at Kabojja was part of the reasons behind the success.

“The increased number of female graduands is attributed to the existence and contribution of female’s campus, and this is good news for IUIU because these female graduands shall make an impact in the society where women will take up leadership roles and support development,” she said.

The chairman university council Dr. Abdul Aziz Alsebail while delivering his speech at the ceremony advised the graduates to effectively use the knowledge and skills acquired at the university to serve and improve humanity.

“Now that you have achieved this academic excellency please go and create impact in your various countries, be a solution to the problems facing your community,” Dr. Alsebail resonated.

Meanwhile, the President of Uganda H.E Yoweri Kaguta Museveni hailed the university for producing its first batch of Doctors noting that this will help reduce the human resource gap in the health sector.

This was in his speech read by the second Deputy Prime minister Hon. Al-Hajj Ali Kirunde Kivejinja who represented him at the graduation ceremony.

In the speech, the President thanked the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the Islamic Solidarity Fund, the Islamic Development Bank, The Federal Republic of Nigeria and Egypt for their support to the University.

He further promised to offer government assistance to the Islamic institution in its efforts to set up its teaching hospital and an engineering Faculty to ensure, affordable and accessible education for all.
